At Irchester, a Roman settlement that is superimposed over an Iron Age settlement has been discovered. The first Roman settlement may have been the ficus of a Claudian fort (ca. A.D. 43). The settlement endured until the fifth century A.D.

A hoard of 42,000 late third-century Antoniniani was found at Irchester in 1963.
