Portus Herculis is located on the eastern side of the Monte Argentario peninsula, about 40 km south-east of Grosseto and about 7 km south-west of Orbetello. and about 12 km from Porto Santo Stefano. The site is in use as a port in the Etruscan, Roman, and Late Antique phases of occupation. It is included on the Peutinger map and in the Itinerarium Maritimum.
