Last week the Pleiades editorial college published 4 new and 342 updated place resources, reflecting the work of Jeffrey Becker, Tom Elliott, Greta Hawes, Brady Kiesling, Rosemary Selth, R. Scott Smith, and the World Historical Gazetteer.

A state once located in the southern part of the continent of Africa, near the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, south of Great Zimbabwe. The Kingdom of Mapungubwe collapsed in the fourteenth century.

A major modern reservoir in Sri Lanka, located southeast of Anuradhapura. Its original construction is traditionally dated to the late third or early fourth century CE. BAtlas 5 inset labels its geometry as "Megisba Stagnum", a toponym for a swamp or wetland reported by Pliny during the first century CE.

A mountain of the Argolid with a higher western peak (Profitis Ilias, 1199 masl) and a lower eastern peak (Mavrovouni or Arna, 1139 masl). Material from the Mycenaean, Archaic, and Classical periods has been found on the western peak and identified with altars of Zeus and Hera described by Pausanias. Aeschylus mentions its use as a signal station.

According to Pausanias, this Aroanios rises in the ancient Erymanthos mountains and flows southward to join other tributaries of the Erymanthos river at ancient Psophis. Immediately north of modern Hawwariya on the southern shore of Lake Mariout in Egypt, archaeological excavations have uncovered an extensive and evidently purpose-built settlement of the latter sixth century CE, with remains of harbor and industrial installations, baths, shops, a funerary church, and a large basilica. This site, probably to be identified as Philoxenite, catered to the needs of pilgrims traveling to the shrine of Saint Menas in Abu Mina. It expanded and replaced a site of at least Hellenistic and Roman date that is perhaps to be identified as Mareia.

A region of northwestern Asia Minor that ancient sources associate with the Mysi, a people who had migrated there from Thrace, probably late in the second millennium BCE. Sources vary on the extent and subdivisions of the region, but in general it seems to have been at least roughly bounded on the north by the Hellespont and Propontis, on the east by the Rhyndacus river (modern Mustafakemalpaşa) and mount Olympus (Ulu Dağ), and on the west either by the Aisepos river (Gönen Çayı) or (if the Troad is taken to be part of Mysia) the Aegean Sea.

A port on the Aegean coast of Caria, south of Miletus, that provided a point of debarkation for travelers to Didyma, Panormos has been identified with the modern bay of Kovela Limanı. Although the ancient shoreline, harbor works, and presumed town have not been precisely located, an important archaic necropolis has been identified just east of the modern Turkish village of Mavişehir and archaeological survey in the area indicates a long and vibrant record of human occupation.

The Stoa Poikile or Painted Stoa, named for a set of paintings inside depicting Athenian military victories, was located in the northwest corner of the Agora of Athens and was the namesake of the Stoic philosophical school. It was built around 460 BC and remained in use until it was spoliated in the sixth century AD. Archaeological excavation has uncovered the western and eastern ends of the building.

The Antonine Itinerary attests to a station "Vopiscianis" (GeogRav "Bobiscianis") on the route from Tocolosida (modern Bled Takourart in Morocco) to Tingi (modern Tangier). Ptolemy's "Piskiana" would seem to reference the same feature or a nearby settlement associated with the road station. Various suggestions have been made by modern scholars for its identification with a suitable archaeological site or ruin in the area; the current communis opinio holds for Souq el Arbaâ du Gharb (see Souk el Arba).
