Published by: Tom Elliott - Horoztepe Bronze Age Settlement and Necropolis
An archaeological site in modern Turkey's Tokat province that now lies in the eastern portion of the modern town of Erbaa. Excavations were conducted there in the mid-20th century. It is best known for having produced artifacts of the Hatti culture, indicating intensive human activity between 4,000 and 2,000 BCE. Due to agricultural activity and development, the site has been significantly damaged and no archaeology is visible on publicly available aerial/satellite imagery.

Published by: Jeffrey Becker - Horoztepe Hellenistic Fortification
Olshausen describes at Horoztepe (Berg) the remains of a fortified settlement (Burg-ruinen) with Hellenistic stairways, cisterns, and rock tombs, but walls of a "later date". Horoztepe, located at modern Bergaa in Turkey's Tokat province, is best known as the site of a Bronze Age settlement and associated cemetery of the Hatti culture. Only cursory publications of the mid-20th-century excavations have appeared; none mention a later fortification, and none are visible in modern, publicly available aerial/satellite imagery.

Published by: Jeffrey Becker - Ligar (river)
"Ligar" is provided as a name for a river in Mauretania Caesariensis by the Ravenna Cosmographer (ed. Schnetz). Gsell (AAA) views "Ligar" as a mistake or corruption for "Siga". Neither Schnetz (in his apparatus) nor BAtlDir address the issue. BAtlas/BAtlDir does not include "Ligar" at all.

Published by: Tom Elliott - Small Roman Theater or Odeon at Sisak
Documented in media released by the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media in 2025, remains of a small theater or odeon of Roman date have been identified and consolidated under the early 20th-century city hall of modern Sisak in Croatia (ancient Segestica/Siscia). Existence of a theater at Sisak was previously mooted on the basis of a Latin inscription mentioning a "magister mimariorum" (leader of a mime-troop?) discovered in the 19th century in a "Weingarten" there, but it is unclear if there was an ancient relationship between this inscription, its original social context, and the newly discovered monument.

In the ninth century BC, Ashurnasirpal II (r. 883-859 BC) built himself a new administrative center. Kalhu (biblical Calah) — modern Nimrud, a site identified as Larissa, a city mentioned in Xenophon’s Anabasis — became the capital of the Assyrian Empire, replacing Ashur, which had served as Assyria’s capital since the third millennium BC. The city — which is located twenty miles south of the modern Mosul and which occupied a strategic position six miles north of the point where the Tigris River meets the Greater/Upper Zab — served as Assyria’s capital until the reign of Sargon II (r. 721–705 BC). Although Kalhu never again became the primary residence of Assyria’s kings, that city remained a vital administrative, military, and religious center until the fall of the Assyrian Empire.
