Located in western Sicily, Ietas has a long and complex history. The settlement is today located within the municipality of San Cipirello, atop Mount Iato in the hinterland of Palermo. Elymians occupied this site beginning in the eighth century BCE, with the urbanized area eventually covering some 40 hectares. Greek influence becomes apparent in the sixth century. Western Sicily came under Carthaginian control during the fourth century BCE. Pyrrhus attacked Ietas in 275 BCE. During the First Punic War, Ietas surrendered to the Romans and, according to Plutarch, became a tributary state. The site was destroyed by Frederick II in 1246 and abandoned.

The Antonine Itinerary attests to a station "Vopiscianis" (GeogRav "Bobiscianis") on the route from Tocolosida (modern Bled Takourart in Morocco) to Tingi (modern Tangier). Ptolemy's "Piskiana" would seem to reference the same feature or a nearby settlement associated with the road station. Various suggestions have been made by modern scholars for its identification with a suitable archaeological site or ruin in the area; the current communis opinio holds for Souq el Arbaâ du Gharb (see Souk el Arba).
Modifications: Changed BAtlas reference to BAtlDir reference; changed time period to 20th century; changed name time to label; this is a Latinization not directly modified name attested in ancient sources, derived from Ptolemy. Edited. Reindex.
