This important Mesopotamian city flanks the eastern edge of the Tigris flood plain, opposite modern Mosul, of which it is now a suburb. From the third millennium B.C. onwards, Nineveh was the most important religious center of the goddess Ištar in the area that would become the Assyrian heartland. Starting in the Middle Assyrian period, the city came under the authority of the kings of Assyria, who often sponsored large-scale building activities there. However, it was not until 704 B.C. that Nineveh became the administrative capital of Assyria, when the Neo-Assyrian king Sennacherib moved the royal family and court there and transformed the city into a thriving imperial metropolis. Nineveh remained Assyria’s capital until 612 B.C., when it was captured and destroyed by a Babylonian-Median collation led by Nabopolassar and Cyaxares. The visible remains of the (7th-century) Assyrian city include the citadel mound Kuyunjik, the smaller mound of Nebi Yunus, and the twelve-kilometer-long city wall.

Qal’eh-i Imam (“Imam Fortress”), also call Qal’eh-i Marivan (“Marivan Fortress”), is one of the most important castles and fortresses in the Kurdistan Province, Marivan District, Iran. This now-ruined military fortification played a key role during the Safavid Period (1502–1737) and was an administrative venter of Ardalanians and Babanians rulers in Kurdistan. The discovery of a stele fragment of the Assyrian king Sargon II (r. 721–705 BC) in the drystone wall enclosing one of the buildings of the village Barqaleh might attest to a settlement there in the eighth century BC.

Creators: Jeffrey Becker - Statues of Harmodios and Aristogeiton
Statues of the tyrannicides Harmodios and Aristogeiton, the assassins of the tyrant Hipparchos and symbols of the Athenian democracy. An initial pair, made by Antenor were erected in the Athenian Agora ca. 510 BC, taken away to Susa by the Persians in 480 BC and returned by Alexander or one of his successors in the late fourth century BC. A replacement pair, made by Kritios and Nesiotes were erected in the Athenian Agora in 477 BC. With few exceptions it was forbidden to erect other statues in the vicinity. Part of the base of the second pair has been found, but not in situ.
