The ancient capital of Sri Lanka from the fourth century BCE to the 11th century CE. It was recorded under the name Anourogrammon by Ptolemy, who notes its primary political status (Basileion). It has sometimes been argued that a "Palaesimundum" mentioned by Pliny in retelling the story of a Sri Lankan embassy to the emperor Claudius is also to be identified with Anourogrammon. A large number of numismatic finds from many periods have been reported in the vicinity.

Ptolemy records a city and island called "Nagadiba" and also provides the ethnic name "Nagadiboi". One strand of twentieth century western scholarship, reflected in BAtlas, tentatively placed this site on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka in the vicinity of modern Trincomalee (see also Emmanuel 2000). Another scholarly tradition, most recently repeated in Ashire 2012, identifies the Ptolemaic Nagadiba with the island and settlement hosting what is now known as the Nagadeepa/Nainadhivu Buddhist shrine off the northern peninsula of Jaffna.

Although the Classical/Hellenistic city was deserted in Pausanias' day, archaeology reveals that the area of modern Nafplio and its natural harbor on the Argolic Gulf was repeatedly a site of habitation and human activity from the Neolithic period to the modern day. Tolmo de Minateda was an early Roman hilltop oppidum located in the municipal territory of modern Helin in the Spanish autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. It was abandoned in the second century CE and then reoccupied in Late Antiquity (ca. 590 CE) as a Visigothic episcopal see during the Byzantine-Visigothic war. It was finally abandoned in the ninth century, and the population was resettled in Murcia, a new foundation. Tolmo de Minateda has been tentatively identified with the attested placename Ilounon.
