Kas(h)kar was a significant Sasanian city, originally built on the west bank of the Tigris river in what is now modern Iraq's al-Kut district. A major flood in antiquity moved the channel of the Tigris, leaving Kashkar on the east bank. The city was supplanted by the new city of Wasit, built in the 8th century CE; Kashkar was subsequently abandoned. The original city is presumed to have lain somewhere in the vicinity of the modern residential area northeast of modern Wasit, across the heavily-controlled modern Tigris.

An ancient, fortified oasis settlement in the western Arabian peninsula that has produced archaeological evidence for occupation from prehistoric times to today. It is named "Hibra" in an inscription of Nabonidus, dating to the 6th century BCE, and features as the site of a Mohammedan conquest in the early years of Islam. Recent discoveries nearby of large "desert kites" (putative animal capture structures), neolithic campsites, and megalithic tombs have received significant press and highlight the site's importance at an early date.

Tell Tayinat (ancient Kunulua) is a large site (comprising both a sizeable citadel and a sprawling lower town) located at the northern bend of the Orontes River, ca. 30 km southeast of Antakya (ancient Antioch). Strategically located, this fortified city served as a royal capital for various historically-attested Bronze and Iron Age kingdoms (ca. 3200-600 B.C.). In 738 B.C., the Assyrian king Tiglath-pileser III conquered Kunulua (alternately called Kinalua), then the royal city of Syro-Hittite kingdom of Patina, annexed it, and transformed it into an important provincial administrative center. Textual evidence found at the site (e.g., a large tablet inscribed with a copy of Esarhaddon’s Succession Treaty) leaves little doubt that Kunulua should be identified as Tell Tayinat.

Larsa (modern Tell as-Senkereh), a city located ca. 21 km east of Uruk, was an important southern Mesopotamian cult center of the sun-god (Utu/Šamaš). Its principal religious structure was called Ebabbar, just like the Šamaš temple in the northern Babylonian city of Sippar. The Sumerian ceremonial names of some of Larsa’s other religious buildings are mentioned in two first-millennium-BC lists of ziggurats and some royal inscriptions, especially from the Isin-Larsa Period (ca. 2025–1763 BC) — when the city of Larsa temporarily became a dominant political power (ca. 1924–1763 BC) — and the Neo-Babylonian Period. The most important of these, at least in the sixth century BC, was the temple tower Edurana, which sometimes went by the name Eduranki. At the beginning of the second millennium BC (ca. 1924 BC), under a man called Gungunum (r. 1932–1906 BC), Larsa broke free of Isin’s dominance over it and established its political dynasty. Although it grew more powerful than its former overlord, Larsa never accumulated a significant amount of territory. At its peak, under the authority of Rīm-Sîn I (r. 1822–1763 BC), it controlled only ten to fifteen other city-states. This city’s political dominance, as well as its dynastic line, was brought to an end by Hammu-rāpi of Babylon (r. 1792–1750 BC). After 1763 BC, Larsa was never again a major political player in Babylonia.

Marad (modern Tell Wannat es-Sadum), a city located ca. 60 km southeast of Babylon, was the cult center of the god Lugal-Marda; it is approximately halfway between Babylon and Isin, on the Arahtu canal. Details about the cultic topography of this settlement, which was established in the Early Dynastic Period (ca. 2700 BC), are known from a number of cuneiform sources, including Neo-Babylonian royal inscriptions, the so-called "Canonical Temple List," and two first-millennium-BC ziggurat lists. Marad's principal temple, Eigikalama, is attested from the Old Akkadian Period to Neo-Babylonian Period.

The “Shalmaneser Gate” gave access from the lower town of Kalhu to the citadel. This entrance, which was flanked by a pair of inscribed stone lions, was located on the east citadel wall, just north of the Nabû temple Ezida. This gate, which its excavators named after the ninth-century-BC Assyrian ruler Shalmaneser III (r. 858–824 BC), is assumed to have been the main east citadel gate, especially since a road ran between it and the armory (Fort Shalmaneser) located in the southwest corner of the city.

Nineveh's western wall had seven (or eight) gates: the Step Gate of the Palace was the second gate from the northern city wall. The Neo-Assyrian king Sennacherib constructed it sometime between 694 and 691 B.C. and he gave it the Akkadian ceremonial name Libūr-ēpissa, which means "May Its Builder Endure." The gate is still unlocated, but, based on its everyday name Akkadian name mušlālum ša ēkalli ("Step Gate of the Palace"), it must have led up to Sennacherib's Palace on the citadel, perhaps up to the harem or its northern section.

Ṭušpa is an Urartian fortress and settlement near the historic center of Van in southeastern Turkey. Here archaeological remains of buildings and inscribed objects of several Urartian kings starting with Sarduri I (ninth century BCE) have been found. Furthermore, the place is frequently mentioned in Urartian inscriptions in connection with the god Haldi, who is addressed as "Lord of Ṭušpa-City". Ṭupša is often referred to as the capital of Urartu, although this remains uncertain. Rather than an administrative center, it was probably a religious one. In later times the place was known as Thospia/Bouana/‘Ospa’ (BAtlas 89 F2 Thospia/Bouana/‘Ospa’). Today the ruins of the fortress are referred to as Van Kalesi (or Van Castle).
