A waterway connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The author of the Periplus Maris Erythraei mentions this area, but does not explicitly name the strait, referring instead to the "mouth of the Persian Gulf". The origin of the toponym "Hormuz" remains debated.
