An ancient settlement and modern town (also known as Mahabalipuram) located on the east coast of peninsular India. It is the site of a large complex of Hindu temples dating to the 7th/8th centuries CE that is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is mentioned in Tamil literature beginning in the 8th century CE. The exact location of the city's harbor and its possible identification with non-Tamil sources (especially Roman ones) remain inconclusive.
