Hadrumetum/Iustinianopolis was an important ancient port in North Africa. Founded by Phoenicians, the site pre-dated Carthage. Under Roman administration the site prospered and Trajan assigned it colonial status as Colonia Concordia Ulpia Trajana Augusta Frugifera Hadrumetina.
