The site occupies a hill near the mouth of the Marangone river between the Etruscan cities of Caere and Tarquinia. The settlement was defended by a fortification wall. Extensive necropoleis have been identified near the coast, as well as sacred sites at the Punta della Vipera. From the Archaic period (6th c. B.C.), the site was located in the territory of Caere and may have played a role in the control of trade in metal ores from the Tolfa hills. Once the Roman site of Castrum Novum was established the Etruscan site was abandoned.
