Strabo locates a Hypereia krēnē, mentioned in the Iliad's "Catalog of Ships", at Pherai in Thessaly (modern Velestino) and geographically criticizes its assignment by Homer to the contingent led by Eurypylos. Without comment, Pliny places "fons Hyperia" immediately before "oppida Pherae" in a list of places in Thessaly (E. Kirsten in RE accepts this as a reference to the spring at Pherai, but BAtlDir lists it as an "unlocated spring in Thessaly"). Archaeological work confirms a perennial spring at Velestino was a locus of settlement activity from the Neolithic period onwards, and a structure monumentalizing the spring was built and modified during the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
