The "Bitter Lakes" are hypersaline lacustrine bodies in the Nile River valley of Egypt. Prior to the construction of the Suez Canal, these lakes constituted a dry salt valley or basin. They are referred to by ancient Greek and Latin authors as well as in the so-called "Pyramid Texts".
