The ritual and political capital of Upper Egypt at the end of the Predynastic period and the Early Dynastic Period, with occupation beginning as early as Naqada I. The site was an important ritual center for the worship of Horus.

The chronology assigned to the DARE Location (Point; 330 BC - AD 300) is not accurate, as the fortress at Nekhen dates to Second Dynasty and not the Roman period.
