Vatican City is an independent state, established following the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929. Its sovereign territory measures 44 hectares in area. There is a long and complex settlement history associated with this center of Christendom, beginning from the establishment of the Basilica of Saint Peter, erected during the reign of Constantine I in the fourth century CE on the site of what was believed to be the tomb of Saint Peter.
