An island in modern Iran at the head of the Persian Gulf, bounded today on the southwest by the Shatt al-Arab and on the northeast by the Bahmanshir. Its name first appears certainly in 9th century CE sources, but it may relate to an apparent cognate preserved in Ptolemy and its general topography (or that of an earlier island in the vicinity) may have been known to some Greek and Roman geographers.
