An important city of Magna Graecia, Metapontum was located on the Gulf of Tarentum. The Achaeans were responsible for its foundation, perhaps as early as the eighth century BC.

- The so-called 'Tavole Palatine' is the site of the ruins of a sixth century BC Doric temple sacred to Hera and associated with the city of Metapontum.
