Casal Bertone is named for the modern Roman neighborhood where it was discovered, about 2 km east of the Porta Maggiore. The site of Casal Bertone covers more than 3,000 square meters. The eastern portion of the site comprised a residential area that was occupied from about the first century B.C. to the fifth to sixth centuries A.D.

An imperial necropolis with at least 326 tombs was identified at modern Castel Malnome (Ponte Galeria) in Italy. Archaeological evidence marks these as burials belonging to working-class people of the Roman imperial period, with most graves having either no grave goods or very few. The osteoarchaeological analysis led excavators to speculate that the individuals buried here many have worked in the salt flats.
