A cave located on mount Ismaros near the ancient settlement of Maroneia in Aegean Thrace. The cave was in human use from the late Neolithic period until the abandonment of the fortified settlement in the 13th century CE. The cave is known locally as "The Cave of Polyphemos" or "The Cave of the Cyclops".

Buddhist cave monastery complex in the cliffs above the Dachuan River near the Dunhaung Oasis, constructed in 366 CE and in use until the 14th Century CE. The caves contain thousands of murals and painted sculptures, and thousands of manuscripts in Chinese, Tibetan, Uyghur, Sogdian, Sanskrit, and Khotanese were stored in the so-called "Library Cave." The Mogao Caves were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1987.

A famous ancient sanctuary of Poseidon located at the southern end of the modern Mani peninsula of the Peloponnese. Literary and archaeological evidence indicate that the sanctuary featured a temple, a cave treated as a mouth of the underworld, and other structural and monumental components. It seems to have served as a sanctuary site for suppliants and a context for the formal manumission of enslaved persons.
