Over the last three weeks the Pleiades editorial college published 25 new place resources and approved updates to 273 existing place resources. This blog post provides an annotated list of the affected resources with links to each.

New Place Resources

  • At Agios Vasileios is the archaeological site of the only Mycenaean palace thus far discovered in Lakonia. It is located near the village of Xerokambi in Lakonia, Greece.

  • A Mycenaean tholos tomb located southeast of Amphissa, Phokida.

  • 12th-century church in Paray-le-Monial, France. This site was a popular pilgrimage site and is an important example of Cluniac architecture.

  • A small cave sanctuary near the later Daphi monastery with activity in the fifth century BCE.

  • The current Daphni Monastery in Attica dates to the eleventh century, yet its earlier Christian phases belong to the sixth century AD when a Christian site grew atop the abandoned and destroyed sanctuary of Apollo Daphnaios.

  • Located in Regio VIII of the ancient city of Rome, Graecostadium refers to a place that is either an area that is enclosed by walls or a set of buildings. This seems to have been a large area in any case. The Graecostadium is damaged by fire and subsequently restored under Antoninus Pius. Ths place burned again during the reign of Carinus.

  • "Grotta di Seiano" or "Cave of Sejanus" refers to a subterranean tunnel dating to the early Roman Imperial period that was excavated into the volcanic tuff. It connected the area of what is now modern Bagnoli and the Campi Flegrei with the Gaiola Valley. Its construction is often attributed to Lucius Cocceius. It is now part of the Pausilypon Archaeological Park.

  • An archaeological site located in the middle Jordan Valley in the West Bank that includes the largest known of the complex oval compound type habitation sites connected with the Israelite Settlement period.

  • The Maltepe Tumulus is located in Manole, Bulgaria. The tumulus measures 125 – 130 m in diameter and some 21 m in height.

  • Megali Koryfi, an archaeological site on the island of Aegina in proximity to the Christian chapel of Ag. Antonios that is noted for the presence of substantial remains of drystone fortifications dating to the Mycenaean period.

  • A well-preserved pile-dwelling settlement site dating to the Late Bronze Age that is located in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

  • In the Palace of Sennacherib (South-West Palace) at Nineveh, in Room LIV, nineteenth-century British excavators found the remains of an archive consisting of cuneiform tablets, some of which also included summary notes in Aramaic.

  • A Roman tower-type tomb that some local traditions label as the tomb of Cnaeus Pompeius Magnus. The structure is located at the so-called Villa di Pompeo, south of Castel Gandolfo in Italy.

  • Group of three Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Age tells located in Iran's Qazvin Plain.

  • A place in Arabia that is mentioned in Strabo's discussion of the ultimately unsuccessful eastern campaign of Aelius Gallus. It was located eleven days marching from Negrana. From Seven Wells Gallus proceeded to Chaalla and Malothas.

  • A Middle Kingdom fortress that was originally located on the Nile's west bank at the Second Cataract of the Nile River. The ruins of the fortress are now situated on an island in Lake Nubia in northern Sudan.

  • Settlement in the Qazvin Plain intermittently inhabited from the 5th-1st millennia BCE; the westernmost of the three Bronze Age tells comprising the Sagzabad Cluster.

  • Fortification located near the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem. The current structure dates to the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, and is on the site of earlier Hasmonean, Herodian, Byzantine, and Early Muslim fortifications.
