GANE OBJECT 52459 According to UNESCO, the "Old City" of Sana'a (altitude 2,000 m) became a major Islamic center during the seventh and eighth centuries. The heritage of that period of Islamic prosperity is reflected in the "103 mosques, 14 hammams and over 6,000 houses, all built before the 11th century." Sana’a’ is renowned for its tower-houses.
