The hill of Poggio Civitella near Montalcino, Italy, rises to a height of 661 meters above sea level. Beginning in 1993, excavation campaigns revealed a series of settlement horizons dating to the first millennium BCE, ranging from the archaic to the Hellenistic periods. The hilltop was fortified during this period.
