The so-called "Forum Boarium" in Pompeii was erroneously named by its 1755 excavators who discovered the bones of large bovids and assigned the name that still is used to describe this insula in Pompeii's Regio II (II, 5).

This area is located at the eastern edge of the city, just inside the Porta Urbulana (or Porta di Sarno / Sarnus Gate), just to the north of the amphitheater. The insula was cleared between December 1954 and May 1955. W. Jashemski's work following the clearance of the insula demonstrated the presence of an ancient vineyard within at least a portion of it.
