The proposed location of the Šamaš Gate is based on Pedersén 2021 fig. 2.2, which shows a plan of Babylon, with 200 m UTM coordinates given. This entrance into Babylon, which was on the western bank of the Euphrates (in ancient times) and on the southern inner city wall, might have been located approximately 32.527,44.420733. Because the course of the Arahtu River (Šaṭṭ al-Ḥillah, a branch of the Euphrates River) has shifted over time, the ruins of the ancient gate are no longer visible since that watercourse would have flowed over the very spot where the Šamaš Gate had been built.
