The ancient settlement associated with the modern village of Alagankulam on the Vaigai river in Tamil Nadu is thought to have been an ancient seaport though now positioned some 3 kilometers from the coast. The immediate area has produced local and imported ceramics (including Mediterranean amphorae and Roman potsherds), as well as fourth-century Roman coins.
