This ancient settlement and seaport was located on the southeastern coast of peninsular India in the vicinity of the modern village of Poompuhar/Poombuhar. Excavations (including a wood-then-brick-built wharf carbon-dated to ca. 250 BCE), as well as epigraphic and literary evidence, demonstrate a thriving seaborne trade and Buddhist religious center through to the 7th century CE. The place was known to the Romans as Chaberis (Ptolemy) and Kamara (PME).
