An ancient Greek settlement at the southern end of the Bosphorus where modern-day Istanbul, Turkey now stands. It flourished and grew throughout the Greek and Roman periods. The city was renamed Constantinopolis (q.v.) and much expanded by the fourth-century emperor, Constantine and his successors.
