Pausanias mentions the theater of Sicyon as he describes the ancient city. Following his description of the acropolis, he notes that a "statue of a man with a shield" was to be seen on the stage of the theater and that this statue was said to represent Aratus, the son of Cleinias. Aratus of Sicyon was strategos of the Achaean League seventeen times and died in 213 B.C., allegedly poisoned by Philip V of Macedon. A temple of Dionysus was located near the theater.
