Kaneš or Kanesh (Hittite: Neša) is located adjacent to modern Kültepe, thus at times the site is referred to as Kültepe Kaneš. The site was one of continuous occupation from the Chalcolithic period to the time of the Roman empire, although its cultural zenith was as a major Hittite site that was the site of a large merchant quarter (kârum) of the Old Assyrian kingdom (ca. twentieth to sixteenth centuries BC).
