The archaeological site of Vignale was inhabited continuously from the third century B.C. to the fifth century A.D. Until the middle of the first century B.C. While it was probably a small farm, it nevertheless had already some connection with the road network. Around 40 B.C. a villa was established at the site, with a production of wine-carrying amphorae (Dressel 1). During the principate of Augustus, alongside the villa some buildings started to function as a mansio. Only a few decades later, during the reign of Tiberius or Nero, a new owner established a massive production centre for roof-tiles at the site, some of them bearing the maker's stamp M·FULVI·ANT. Some of these stamps were also found in Rome. By the second century A.D., the settlement was no longer an active production centre, but continued to be a dwelling place. In the fifth century, possibly following a short period of abandonment, a small village occupied the ruins, with wooden huts and a large funerary area.
The archaeological site has been known since 1831, but regular excavation only began in 2003.
