Salvage excavation identified the site of Boncuklu Tarla in 2008. Scientific excavation began in 2012 alongside the Ilısu Dam project. The site represents a rare and seemingly uninterrupted archaeological sequence for the preceramic Neolithic in the Upper Tigris Valley.
