An inscription found at Mada'in Salih, dating between A.D. 175 and 177, records the restoration of a vallum undertaken by the civitas Hegrenorum, on behalf of the emperor Marcus Aurelius. Cooley et al. note that this provides evidence for Roman soldiers at this site prior to the Severan period.
