The "Tombs of the Kings" is an archaeological site located to the north of ancient Nea Paphos. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, the site is particularly known for its eight large subterranean rock-cut tombs. The first tombs date to the early Hellenistic period, and some bear a clear relationship to the rock-cut tombs in Alexandria. The site continued to be in use during the Roman period. While the site was always known and early archaeological work took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, major work was not done until the 1970s and 1980s under the direction of Sophocles Hadjisavvas.
