The basilica was located near the barracks of the Fifth Cohort of the Vigiles on the Caelian Hill and is first documented during the reign of Pope Symmachus in AD 499. Pope Agatho reorganized the church in 678. Pope Paschal I rebuilt the basilica from 818 to 822.
