The Pleiades Community uses some automated tools to interact with other web services. This page summarizes their nature and activities.

Problems or concerns?

Please contact the Pleiades managing editors via pleiades.admin@nyu.edu if you have any questions or are experiencing any problems related to the following.

PleiadesEntityBot

User Agent: PleiadesEntityBot/#.# (+https://pleiades.stoa.org/help/bots#PleiadesEntityBot)

This user agent string is used by code in the PleiadesEntity product that is part of the core Pleiades web application whenever it is interacting with external web services. Only the following web services are used.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) API

The PleiadesEntityBot issues a read-only request against the OSM API when an authenticated Pleiades user directs Pleiades to import a reference to a particular node, way, or relation in the OpenSteetMap dataset. Pleiades uses the API response to construct content for a new Pleiades Location resource based on the corresponding OSM resource (including link-back and provenance information in accordance with OSM licensing).

Frequency: variable, but as requests are made only when a Pleiades contributor is creating a new resource, frequency of requests against the OSM API should only range between 0 and 100 per day.

Sources: You should expect that most get requests using the PleiadesEntityBot user agent string originate from the Pleiades production server (pleiades.stoa.org). Requests may occasionally come from other hosts during testing. A significant series of requests from another host may represent a case of user-agent spoofing by a third party.

PleiadesRefBot

The PleiadesRefBot user agent string is employed by a series of programs that the managing editors use to construct or check references to other websites in Pleiades. More details will be added here as the software matures.
