This area, subject to the rising waters of the Black Sea, may also have been referred to by the name or descriptive term "Sorsdesertus" on the Peutinger Map.

Inhabited from the Mesolithic period, the Fayyum contains the earliest evidence of farming in Egypt. The water levels of the Fayyum's lake varied significantly until a land reclamation project during the 12th dynasty implemented artificial water controls. During the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, the Fayyum was administered as the Arsinoite Nome.
