Modern Butrint (Butrinti) in Albania, ancient Bouthroton was an ancient Greek and later Roman city located in Epirus. The city became an important bishopric by the sixth century. The site was enrolled as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 because of its archaeological remains, which date from prehistoric times down through the late Middle Ages.

With settlement from the Neolithic onwards, Bracara Augusta was established as a civitas in 20 B.C. In the third century A.D. Diocletian advanced the settlement to the capital of the administrative area known as Conventus Bracarensis, forming part of the Roman province of Gallaecia.
