- The Cimmerians, a people likely originating in the Pontic steppe. They are believed to have attacked Urartu by way of the Caucasus around 714 BCE before invading Assyria, being defeated by Sargon II in 705. They reached the height of their power after conquering Phrygia in 696-695 and Sardis in 652. They were defeated by Alayattes of Lydia sometime around 619, and the remaining members of the group likely settled in Cappadocia.
