Last week we published 8 new place resources. In addition, 40 existing place resources were updated.

New Place Resources

  • Walls and towers surrounding the ancient city of Alyzeia in Acarnania. Significant reference was made to the plan in Murray 1982 (page 107, figure 107) in mapping these components; however, only those locations that are visible in more recent Google Earth imagery (especially that dating to April 2017 and May 2020) are included here.

    Contributors:
  • A Byzantine and Ottoman fortification northeast of (and overlooking) the Azyleia/Mytika plain in Acarnania, Greece. Some commentators have supposed an earlier antecedent on the site.
    Creators: Tom Elliott
    Contributors:
  • A megalithic stone circle dating to the third millennium BCE located in Peraleda de la Mata in eastern Extremadura, Spain. The monument is usually submerged beneath the waters of the Embalse de Valdecañas, a reservoir of the Tagus river.
    Creators: Jeffrey Becker
    Contributors:
  • Three tiers of niches were found in Room H 5 (on the northwestern side of Forecourt I) of the Nabû temple at Dur-Šarrukin, the short-lived capital of the Assyrian king Sargon II (721–705 BC). Fragments of clay tablets and inscribed prisms in these niches suggest that a temple library was located here. The empty niches might be a result of the move of the capital to Nineveh under Sennacherib (704–681 BC) or of the use of perishable writing materials.

    Contributors:
  • Cemetery site near Lama village, Iran with almost 60 graves dating to the late 2nd-early 1st millennium CE. Most of the graves were destroyed by bulldozing in the area for a road in December 1999.
    Creators: Zachary Rosalinsky
    Contributors:
  • A limestone quarry located just south of the modern Acarnanian village of Lepenou with clear evidence of having been used as a source for the construction of the temple of Zeus and other monuments at nearby ancient Stratos.
    Creators: Tom Elliott
    Contributors: Brady Kiesling
  • A temple in Acarnania, located between Stratos (modern Sourovigli) and modern Lepenou. The temple seems to have been constructed in the Greek Archaic period on the site of an earlier Helladic settlement. The temple continued in operation into the Roman period.
    Creators: Brady Kiesling, Tom Elliott
    Contributors:
  • A classical/hellenistic temple located in the likely territory of Acarnanian Alyzeia. The temple site lies over 6km southeast from the ancient walled city (about a kilometer south of modern Paliovarka, Greece) at a site known in modern times as Drymonas Archontochoriou. It is perched on rising ground with a view westward to the channel and the island of Karnos (modern Kalamos). Inscriptions have been recovered from the site, and an unlooted portion of a votive deposit was scientifically excavated in the 1990s.
