There was likely a Thracian settlement in the vicinity of modern Shoumen/Shumen in Bulgaria prior to Roman and subsequent occupation. Remains of a late antique complex of structures with associated churches has been identified beneath the remains of a multi-phase fortress on high ground to the west of the modern city.
