Combretovium is a 60 hectare open settlement, with occupation from the late Iron Age and Claudian periods through to the middle of the fourth century.

CoMbretovium, is an unwarranted respelling of the observed names that begin with CoN-, probably motivated by a desire to make the name seem "Celtic" like the old French word combre 'barrage, dam', which survives in English encumbrance.
