The cathedral in Faras, founded in 620 and rebuilt in the 8th and 10th centuries, respectively, was the seat of the Diocese of Faras. The site had well-preserved wall paintings from the 8th to 9th centuries. The cathedral was flooded by the creation of Lake Nasser in the 1960s.
