Rodolfo Lanciani excavated the Mithraeum of the Seven Spheres in 1886. He discovered the building's foundation courses and mosaic pavements. On the basis of the brickwork technique, the shrine was dated to the Antonine period. The superstructure evident today is modern, built in order to protect the mosaic floors.
