History
The Šamaš Gate, the first of the eight city gates of Dūr-Šarrukīn mentioned in Sargon II’s royal inscriptions, might be identified as decorated Khorsabad Gate 3, the northernmost entrance on the southeast wall.
Because there is no one-to-one correlation between Sargon’s inscriptions and available archaeological evidence, the proposed identification of the Šamaš Gate with Khorsabad Gate 3 remains open to debate. Alternative locations have been suggested: undecorated Gate 4 and undecorated Gate 2. Because one expects a grand gate to be named after Šamaš, Gate 3 seems to be the most plausible suggested location for the Šamaš Gate.
