This gate has been tentatively identified as the Adad Gate (Beate Pongratz-Leisten), the Bēlet-ilī Gate (Andreas Fuchs), and the Šamaš Gate (Laura Battini, Jamie Novotny, Alexander Sollee). Because there is no one-to-one correlation between Sargon’s inscriptions and available archaeological evidence, the proposed identification of the ancient name of Khorsabad Gate 3 remains open to debate. Since one expects a grand, decorated entranceway to be associated with the god Šamaš, Gate 3 might have been dedicated to Šamaš, rather than to the god Adad or the goddess Bēlet-ilī.
