A modern name for an alliance formed by Greek cities, led by Athens, in 478 BCE. Formed in the aftermath of the Persian Wars, the purpose of the league was ostensibly to avenge damage to Greece inflicted by the Persian Empire by attacking Persian territory. Athens increasingly dominated the league until it effectively became the Athenian Empire.
