Align Pleiades to Gsell's Atlas archéologique de l'Algérie
DIA/Arachne are putting online both the maps and text from Stéphane Gsell's archaeological atlas of Algeria. BAtlas referred heavily to the AAA, and therefore so does Pleiades. Converting our plain-text AAA references into links would put a wealth of additional information at the fingertips of Pleiades users.
Associate all appropriate places with the Treveri
There is good information available on the settlements and other features that should be associated with the people called the Treveri.
Bulk Data Sources
The managing editors maintain a growing list of datasets offered to Pleiades by their creators that cannot yet be incorporated owing to technical limitations.
Current Archaeology in Turkey: Add Links
Goal: collate CAT content against Pleiades and add to Pleiades the appropriate references to all matched entries in CAT.
Direct-link all BIFAO citations to the online PDFs
The Bulletin de l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale is now online, with a single PDF at a discrete URI for each article. Thanks to the BAtlas Map-by-Map Directory data, Pleiades cites a large number of BIFAO articles. It would be great to mine the direct links and get them into Pleiades.
Direct-link all EFA citations to the online PDFs
The French School at Athens has put PDFs of all its publications online. Thanks to the BAtlas Map-by-Map Directory data, Pleiades cites a large number of those works. It would be great to mine the direct links and get them into Pleiades.
Hadrian's Wall Milecastles and Turrets 2012
A project to add the milecastles and turrets of Hadrian's Wall to Pleiades
Ideas and suggestions
Less than fully formed ideas and suggestions are also welcome. Please attach them here as comments and we'll promote them to project pages when interest and details develop.
Improving Titles and Descriptions for Prominent Places
Users often have trouble finding information about prominent places because of the way titles and descriptions for place resources have been constructed by default from the legacy Barrington Atlas data. We can fix this.
Mashup Pleiades and British Museum Data/Location Thesaurus
Goal: The British Museum has recently rolled out a Semantic Web endpoint. Surely there's some good synergy that could be achieved by connecting it to Pleiades and vice versa.
Princeton Encyclopedia of Classical Sites: Add Links
Goal: collate the contents of Pleiades against the online version of PECS hosted by the Perseus project and then add corresponding references (links) to Pleiades.
Sorting out the Red Sea
Some ancient geographic names vary in their association with physical features. Pleiades provides data, following BAtlas, on these various views, but could probably do a better job disambiguating and explaining them for non-expert users.
Talbert's Rome's World Database
Aligning entries in Talbert's database to Pleiades names will give us comprehensive representation of Peutinger map names in Pleiades.
Whittle away at unlocated places
We can surmise the place type and improve the descriptions of many unlocated places
