Radiocarbon dates indicate human activity beginning at least 50,000 years ago. Archaeogenetics have focused on evidence related to Mesolithic inhabitants of the cave site.

A sacred cave located on Mt. Zas on the island of Naxos, Zas Cave preserves evidence of human occupation ranging from the Late Neolithic period to the Early Cycladic III period. Local tradition holds that the sky god Zeus hid from Cronus in the cave. Rock cuttings in the area refer to "Zeus Melosios".
